Choosing your fabric
Colours and UV
Awning fabric gives excellent protection against UV radiation. The degree of protection depends on the colour of the fabric chosen. Light coloured fabrics let more UV light through than darker colours, but are still as effective as factor 50 sun cream (filtering more than 90% of the ultra violet radiation)
Colour and heat factor
In the summer season in South Africa, solar energy received by the Earth can go over 1 200 W/m², which is equivalent to having several radiators per square metre of ground surface. Depending on the colour, an awning fabric can block out between 80 and 95% of the solar energy.
Colour and luminosity
At midday on a sunny day the brightness can easily reach 50 000 Lux. An awning fabric gives shade from the light and depending on the colour can generate a value of brightness varying between 1 000 and 5 000 Lux – which makes for a pleasant and well-lit environment
Colour temperature
Colours have a big influence on our well being and help create a cold, warm or temperate atmosphere. An awning fabric colours sunlight and has a direct influence as to how we perceive our surroundings. A bluey shade will ‘cool’ the tone of the light and enhance the feeling of freshness. A yellow colour will ‘warm’ the tone of the light and give an impression of heat
